KIDS 1ST DAY - JUNE 3RD

Kids 1st Day, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Forest City-London, is a celebration of all the wonderful opportunities available to London families. It also showcases the committed people, businesses and organizations that make this city great.

Kids 1st Day started after a report was released that focused on London’s problems facing children and families including poverty. The idea was to highlight the many wonderful organizations and unique attractions in London that can help children thrive.

Investing in Children takes the lead in arranging a day where more than 50 businesses and organizations across the city offer free or low-cost activities to children and families. The day is always chosen to be held on an elementary school PA Day shared by the London boards.

This event reminds the community of what a great place London is for families and gives children the opportunity to try new things and visit new places!

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT LARRY SMITH...

Tara Dunphy & Larry Smith will be performing on the Rotary Square this Friday, June 3rd from 11AM to 1PM for Kids 1st Day!

Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Larry has over 45 years experience as a professional musician. From his early years in the Toronto Roots scene, Larry knew that his life would always head in a musical direction and eventually that road led him to London, Ontario.

Many years were spent touring North America as a sideman, performing alongside and sharing the bill with such names as The Smothers Brothers, Waylon Jennings and Eric Nagler. After many years on the road with children’s performer Glenn Bennett, Larry chose to start his own group and formed the acclaimed Canadian swing supergroup, The Jitterbugs. Larry has cemented his role as one of Southwestern Ontario’s most sought after bandleaders and guitarists while also serving as a composer and arranger for Symphony Orchestras including Orchestra London, the Thunder Bay Symphony and the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing, Larry also teaches guitar, bass and computer based recording. For more information on teaching, please click HERE.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT DONALD WAUGH...

Donald Waugh will be performing on the Rotary Square this Friday, June 3rd from 1PM to 3PM for Kids 1st Day!

Donald was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. He started playing the piano at the age of 7 with encouragement from my parents. When he was 17 years old, he found his brother-in-law’s bass guitar and by the next morning he had taught himself the bass lines to a few songs. His passion for the bass guitar and for music in general grew from there.

When he started College, he became serious about his music career. Donald studied visual arts, Jazz theory and the bass guitar at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica. During his studies his main influences were the various bands he performed in; the Javier Latin Jazz Band, the Jill Gibson Trio and the Kathy Brown Band, which allowed him to tour all around Jamaica.

During his final year of college, he started my own band called Airplai®. For the next four years his sole focus was on Airplai® Band, which was his first independent endeavor. He was then approached by GeeJam Studios to audition for their band, the Jolly Boys. This was not a simple task as he needed to learn to play the banjo. He arrived early for the audition and in three hours I taught myself how to play the banjo with the help of Mr. Google. For the next year he toured with the Jolly Boys around Europe, the Caribbean and the Middle East. During his time with the Jolly Boys, he collaborated on an album project called Quantum Reggae with song writer, Jim Belleau, and musician/singer/song writer, Maroghini.

Donald is also the owner and founder of Airplai® Productions, where they do album production, song writing, composing/arranging, video editing, film scoring, and jingles. Also, over a decade ago, he created the Perfect10course, which continues to offer online music lessons for bass guitar, guitar, drums, and piano. In 2013, he was discovered online by an agent, which led him to his current venture as a Solo Bassist/Guitarist onboard cruise ships.

In 2014, he released his first solo album, Just Passing Through, under the label Airplai®️ Productions. This project was ten years in the making. His second album, Feel Brand New, was released at the end of 2016. His most recent album, Early Days, was released in the summer of 2018. Donald is very excited to announce that his fourth album is currently in the works and will be out very soon! All his albums are available on iTunes, GooglePlay and Amazon right now to download.

ABOUT ANA LUISA...

Ana Luisa will be performing this Saturday at the Farmers Market from 11:00AM to 1:00PM.

“Born in Mexico with the music in my roots: my father used to sing and play guitar and my oldest sister (Laura VS), is a singer and composer. I started my love for the music since l was a little child. While I was a student I participated in talent competitions, joined chorus, estudiantinas and rondallas, then I joined a latin band as the lead vocal. I came to Canada and my passion for the music grew even more and wanted to share my musical roots (latin music): Mariachi Music, baladas, boleros, and latino rhythms with the people in my new home.

Since then I have been singing for festivals, private and public events around Ontario. I became the lead vocal of the Latin Power Band under the direction of the renowned Saxophonist Gianny Correa; great musician and mentor who gave me the opportunity to become part of his band from which I am very thankful and happy to be part of it since almost 9 years ago. Keeping a great passion for the latino music; I give the hearth in every single melody performed with the unique Latino roots feeling.”
