Announcing… 👩‍🌾💛🌾☀️

We promised big news and we are about to deliver! And it's June, always an exciting month for seasonal food (strawberries!!!) and local goods to begin with, and an important month for recognizing the history, heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada during National Indigenous History Month, as well as celebrating Pride Month to honour and demonstrate the contributions the LGBTQ2+ community have made - an opportunity for education and celebration.

So it might seem silly to be celebrating the arrival of strawberries, but we’re pretty pumped nonetheless. We saw the first of these red berry gems last weekend – only 13 pints from Thames River Melons, but wow! What a sight to see! It was as much a surprise for us as it was for you, and it reminded us of the constant movement of time. Food is something we can count on and rely on (thank you to those who nurture the plants!) and it’s a beautiful thing. The world around us might change, and we’ve certainly seen that this past year, but strawberries will always look for the same sun to foster their growth.

Thames River Melons is hoping to have more strawberries this weekend! And next week, June 12, we are hoping to see Heather Joyce back at market as well!

And, as promised, here’s two more things to get excited about…😉

Thursdays are about to get a whole lot more exciting!

In 2020, we made the decision to cancel our Thursday Farmers’ Markets for the year. Earlier this year, we weren’t sure if we would be able to bring them back, BUT this is your official announcement that Thursday Evening Farmers’ Markets will be back again this summer!

Our first Thursday Farmers’ Market will be held on June 17th, only two short weeks from now! Every Thursday subsequent, you will be able to find some of your long-time favourite vendors, a few new faces and products, live music, beer, and more, from 4PM to 7PM. A perfect time to pick up your groceries, grab some dinner, and relax for a moment while enjoying the market.

Can’t make it on Saturday? No problem!

Need groceries for a weekend away? Say no more!

Looking for a relaxing evening downtown? We’ve got you!

One day of Farmers’ Market isn’t enough? We completely understand!

*Stay tuned, because we have some exciting things planned for our opening day! We’ll be introducing some new vendors before then as well!

Sole to Soul Shoe Drive

Last fall, we worked with 519Pusuit to collect socks for our friends facing homelessness. We were astounded by the turnout from our community and 519Pursuit was able to collect nearly 60,000 pairs of socks!

This Spring, we are again asking for your help, but to gather shoes. Our friends facing homelessness wear their shoes all day, every day and go through them quickly. From June 1st to June 15th, please donate your new or gently used shoes at the Market! Please only donate shoes suitable for walking long distances (running shoes, sneakers, etc.). We have donation boxes at our Talbot Street Entrance and in the Market Office. We will also have a box ready at the entrance to the Farmers’ Market this Saturday and next.

Please help us make sure all of our community members have comfortable shoes to wear! If you have any questions, please direct them my way.

Learn more about 519Pursuit by heading to their website.

What to Look Out For:

This weekend is Ray Janssens’s last weekend at the Saturday Farmers’ Market this Spring. He will be back in July on Thursdays, and this fall when his fresh apples are ready!

We were hoping to have Heather Joyce back this weekend, but due to the frost last weekend, she hopes to be joining us on June 12th!

Becky from Entangled Roots is off this weekend from Market as they pivot away from seedlings towards microgreens, fresh herbs, herbal products, and honey. (They’re working on planting over 2,500 pepper plants this week!) Entangled Roots hopes to be back next weekend, June 12th!

Back again this week is Cindy from Elgin Harvest with her frozen woodfired pizzas! Make sure to wish them congratulations as they made a pretty big move recently. Ask her all about it at market!

Harvest Moon Trading Co will now be coming to market every other week. You’ll be able to spot them again on June 12!

Make sure to pick up all your favourite veg this weekend! Beets, scarlet turnips, spinach, asparagus, kale, scallions, lettuce, radishes… the list continues. And please share what you do with it! We love to get a peak into your kitchens.
