Final Farmers’ Market of 2021

Well, that's it. We're heading towards our final Farmers' Market of 2021. This will be our 57th Market of 2021! Fifty seven days of food, community, farmers, and friends. Farmers' Markets are central places for communities to thrive and the social connection between farmers, producers, and community members is one of our favourite aspects of our Market. Every Thursday evening and Saturday morning, our farmers rolled in with their vehicles laden with goods, and our small business owners set up their tables with neatly stacked items. Moments later, when you join us, we have the wonderful opportunity to witness small everyday moments of life happen.

Here are some of my favourites from this past year: little Market babes growing up right in front of us; seeds becoming seedlings becoming plants becoming sweet fruit becoming “out of season fruit”; that one vendor’s laugh heard across the square every day; setting up Market in the dark and ending it in the sun; eating Lorraine’s tomato tarts; meeting new faces and saying sad goodbyes to others; blueberry jam; little kids dancing to jazz music – I could go on for weeks.

These little moments of sharing, learning, growing, and living are what make the Farmers’ Market a place to return to, and a place we love. Unfortunately it’s my (Patricia) last year working for the Market, so this year-end is extra special for me. Just as I know I will continue to return to Market to take in these moments, I hope you will, too.

We started this year deep in a pandemic. We’re still there, making it work, staying safe, following guidelines; but we’re still here. If anything, we’ve learned that we’re more resilient than some might think. While we hope next year will be easier, I also hope it’s a lot like this one.

The 2022 year

The Farmers’ Market is almost done for 2021 but will be back soon! Our first Indoor Market of 2022 is set for February 5th, the first Saturday of that month. You won’t be seeing another newsletter until mid-January, but lots of work will be happening behind the scenes to prepare for that Market and our move to Outdoors for Easter!

The Farmers’ Market will be much the same next year – the same joy, the same great veg, and the same delicious eats – but will also see some changes.

We have decided that moving forward, there will be no Thursday Evening Market. While it was a convenient time to shop for some, we realized the pandemic took a bigger toll than we realized. As many have had to do, we’ve been re-thinking how we can continue bringing food literacy and enjoyment your way. So, in addition to the Saturday Farmers’ Markets, we’ll be hosting Monthly Seasonal Events related to food and farmers and community! We hope you will all enjoy them as much as will enjoy planning them.

So, not to worry! Weekly Farmers’ Markets on the weekends from February all through to December each year will keep your tables full and your spirits filled.

Until then…from our Market team and vendor family to yours, Happy Holidays and a Wonderful New Year!

Meet Sam!

Another change you will be seeing in the new year is a new friendly face behind the Farmers’ Market! Sam Regier will be your new Farmers’ Market Manager starting in January!

Sam is an avid shopper at our Market and cannot wait to get to know all of you and build meaningful connections with our community. The next newsletter you read, will be written by her. Please give her a warm welcome to the Market! We cannot wait for her to join our team.
