Goodbye September!

Each year, September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30th.   Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”.  The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.   On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools.   National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - Canada.ca

WHO CAN YOU FIND AT THE FARMERS MARKET?

This is the list, folks! See who you can find at the Farmers’ Market this Saturday, October 1st! Click on their names to find information on pre-orders and to learn more about their farms and businesses!

Check out their websites for more information about their products and to see what’s in season/currently available!

NEW THIS WEEK FROM KILLDEER FOOD CO

Fresh Tarbais Shelling Beans – these are fresh beans, a creamy and delicious seasonal treat. Cook them like you would dry beans, but with no soaking and a shorter cooking time!

Red Kraut – a simple but satisfying combo of red cabbage and red beets.

Parsley Root – an herbaceous root that looks like a parsnip but has its own unique flavor, similar to parsley, but with the texture of a carrot. Great in soups!

Hakurei Turnip – fantastic sweet, tender turnip that’s really best raw, but can also be cooked. Don’t snooze on those greens either – they’re really tasty chopped into a soup at the last minute, or sautéed on their own.

Radicchio is at it’s very best this time of year – it loves the cooler weather.

Chunky Red Kuri Squash Soup with Ginger & Coconut – really vibrant fall soup with Swiss chard, fresh young ginger and delightful chunks of squash.
