Pies, Apples, Pastas, and Dog Treats

Happy Thursday! I'm writing this on Wednesday and it's been such a lovely day in downtown London. I enjoyed some left over corn and beans I snagged at the Market on Saturday for today's lunch, and can't wait to use up the last of my tomatoes at dinner. The Thursday Evening Market is always ideal for me to fill in the last few meals of the week before Saturday Market. Some of the things on my list for tomorrow are fresh apples from Ray (always a must-have this time of year), as well as a delicious personal pie from Mary (all for me!), and some fresh treats for my friend's dog, Nessie! Cindy from Elgin Harvest is also at Market this Thursday with take-home pastas and pizzas, perfect for my Friday night meal before an early Market morning! Let me know what's on your list this week!

Friends of the Public Library

This Saturday from 8am to 1pm, Friends of the London Public Library will be joining us again at the Farmers’ Market for their pop-up book sale!

The Friends of the Library has been in existence since 1996 and their main purpose is to raise funds for literacy projects that the Library coordinates. Some of these programs include: Summer Read, Outreach, Family Literacy Day, After School Snacks for Homework Clubs  and Book Club in a Bag!

Swing by, say hi, and shop for some fresh fall reads. Last time they were here, I picked up 8 children’s books and three puzzles!

Fresh Food Drive!

Next week Saturday, September 25th, we’re hosting a food drive for FRESH food! Not often is this possible where fresh and perishable items can be donated for a food drive, but we are up for the challenge!

After the Market at 1pm, the London Food Bank will be picking up all of the food and using it for meals and more for our many community members. We are so thankful for their help!

What can you do? Look out for the donation area on the 25th from 8am to 1pm, Outside on the Market Square, and place your fresh food donation items inside. These can be anything from kale to tomatoes to pumpkins, and we’ll even accept non-perishables if you have them. Anything purchased fresh or anything still fresh from home, is welcome.

(Reminder: it’s not this coming Saturday, but next.)

Relighting the Fire of Hope

September 30th is Orange Shirt Day – a day where we recognize the thousands of Indigenous children who were taken to residential schools, some returning, but many not. Orange shirts are worn to raise awareness and show support, while the funds from purchases go to reconciliation and truth speaking.

Specifically, proceeds will go to support Atlohsa Family Healing Services’ Mino Bimaadiziwin program supporting children, youth and their caregivers who have experienced violence and unhealthy relationships in the home or community, a direct impact and lasting effect of residential schools. PLUS, they will donate $1 from the sale of each shirt, up to September 30, 2021, to a group or organization who honour and celebrate the preservation of Indigenous knowledge, culture and language (soon to be announced).

Atlohsa Family Healing Services is selling and distributing these orange shirts! They have a store on Richmond, but have set up a distribution center here in the Market Kitchen. Their small organization has quickly become like an Amazon warehouse because thousands of orders have come in. If you haven’t yet placed your order, you can do so here; also, volunteers are needed! You can sign up here. Even more slots will open soon, so keep an eye out for that. I volunteered this past Monday and I can ensure you a lovely time with wonderful people.

Atlohsa Family Healing Services is a non-profit organization that provides community members with Indigenous-led programming and services that offer holistic healing, education, shelter and support.
