Let’s talk about Peas!

Happy Thursday, friends! Did you know that peas are actually seeds? Most peas are eaten after they've been removed from their seed pod, but snow and snap peas have tender enough pods that both the pod and young seeds are eaten at once! So many of our vendors have delicious fresh peas at market now. Greystead Gardens' snow peas, Joyce Farms' garden peas, and Sungold Market Garden's sugar snap peas are a few options. Cindy from Elgin Harvest was telling me on Saturday how she combined peas with other fresh spring veg and some of her fresh noodles (now available at market!!) to make a lovely pasta dish. I've been enjoying my fresh peas as a quick snack that travels easily - a picnic with friends, a last minute lunch add-on to take to work, or a pick me up while at the market. Do you prefer your peas fresh, frozen & boiled, preserved, or dried? I grew up eating lots of pea soup with dried peas, and of course the traditional scoop of cooked peas with holiday dinners, and I have to be honest and say that I complained often - they were not my favourite veg! But having tried them fresh, that answer has changed completely! I am always surprised by how consuming a food differently will change my mind on whether it's a favourite or a polite "pass for now."

Meet Emily!

We have a new member on our team! Emily is joining us for two months this summer to help with all things Farmers’ Market. We are so lucky to have her on our team and her passion for local food is blowing us away! We cannot wait for you all to meet her and welcome her to our market family.

Here’s a few fun facts from Emily that you’re sure to enjoy:

  1. I am 5 degrees separated from Meghan Markle. (My cousin’s sister-in-law is friends with Patrick Adams who starred on Suits with Megan Markle!)
  2. I love pasta!
  3. I am an avid reader, and am always looking for new book recommendations!

Make sure to say hello if you spot her at market and bring many new book recommendations and pasta recipes, and share your own near celebrity relation stories!

New Additions!

New to the Thursday Evening Markets is Great Lakes Goat Dairy! Many of you will recognize this name, and we are excited to have them and their great line of goat cheeses back with us!

Another new face to keep an eye out for is Marcela from Cora and Co. Art! They make beautiful hand crafted statement earrings, hair clips, and keychains and will be at market this coming Saturday and the following week.

Pillitteri Estates Winery will also be at our Thursday Evening Markets moving forward – two times a week is always better than one!

Did you know that Cindy from Elgin Harvest now has fresh pasta for sale as well in addition to her woodfired pizzas? They have a few wonderful varieties that we are excited to try!

Dave’s Beef & Lamb and Harvest Moon Trading Co. are both back at market this weekend. They come every other week on Saturdays, so don’t miss them!

Finally, an exciting new feature of our Farmers’ Markets is a fruit/veg washing station! If you have a hard time waiting to eat your fresh strawberries but need to wash them first, your wait is over! We will have a washing station with small colanders available for your use at market starting this Thursday and continuing through the season.
